I bought an engine that was removed from a 56 chevy 4000 truck for $100. It was going to the scrapper if I didn't take it. According to the casting number buster listed in the post above this is a 261 engine but there is only one captain's bar above the starter. Can anyone verify if this really is a 261? It hasn't run in a few years but it turns over and I will definitely bring it back to life if it's a 261. Thanks for any help you can provide.

That is a 261 block casting code.

1. What is the Engine Serial Number that is pressed into the block to rear of the distributor?

2. What is the block date casting code: distributor side of the block, lower left?
It might look a little like this.
The CON 4 indicates the conveyor in the engine assembly plant.
The code on the right is the date casting code.

I'll have to take a look at the other numbers tonight. I'll post what I find tomorrow. Thanks.

E = 5 = May
23 = 23rd
5 = 1955

That's great news. Thanks for the confirmation. It was even built on my birthday, even though it was just a few years ahead of me. Definitely worth saving from the scrapper. I'll store it away for now until I have time to go through it. Thanks again for the help.
