Where was it mounted? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 | it was hanging from the fender strut, maybe it it not a truck horn | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | If that horn was on your 1949 truck, it is not the original horn. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 | thanks, it figures...since I'm not sure how it should be wired, I may have to buy a horn | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 | My 50 has a horn similar to yours mounted to the boss on the intake. I do not know if it is original but I believe it is a period correct horn The mount is diffrent than yours and it does not have that additional item on the bottom To test the horn just ground one lug on the side of the horn body and power the other ...example... Im 12 volts and added a relay, not sure how the original one is wired. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 | I will try 6 volt to horn first, hopefully it is good, can it take 12 volts,or should I reduce? I was wondering what those 2 holes on intake were for.

Just rememner to ground the other lug to your source.
If you have a shop manual the wiring diagram is in the back of the book There is one on line but I cannot read it.

I will try directly to horn (when I get back to it next Wednesday)
testing with Bat charger, so I can switch 6 to 12
thanks for your help, if it works I will make a bracket to mount to boss on intake
the pre53 looks a lot like my horn

It might burn it up if you were to lay on the horn for a few minutes straight but, who does that? I ran 12v through my 6v horns in my DeSoto for years. Run 12v, not 6 as a test. You may also need to use percussive maintenance on it while applying 12v (give it a whack with rubber mallet or something)if something is stuck inside, that should jar it loose. Yo may also grind the rivets off and clean it up inside (I think there may be a pair of contacts inside that can corrode). Yo can replace the rivets with small (looks like 10-32 bolts) or use pop rivets to put it back together. That extra little box on it can probably just go away, it may be a relay but, | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 | thanks, I will try if necessary

No relay was used with the single standard horn from 1947-1952. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 | CRAP, tried as pictured, still not working

I know that is not a very precise way to troubleshoot though! I have also ended up tossing some (or letting them sit in my shop for 15 years thinking one day I will learn something more and fix it!) | | |
