I'm at the stage where it's time to re-store the bed wood, sinse i'm aiming back to factory original shape, the bed wood on my '60 GMC fleet was gloss black (laquer), what do you folks think of the black bed or Fancy stained/varnished bed?

It's wayyyyyy cheaper to just use dry pine with the black gloss paint, but you know how it goes (what another 100.00 buck, i'v went this far)

Any of you decided to go with the black bed bottom?

Ps I posted in the lounge also, and copied here, thinks it might be better

Modelman,

To each his/her own. I would go with original appearance with the wood.

If I had known about the porch paint, I would have used it (I used muliple coats of ebony stain and then multiple coats of satine marine spar varnish).

After saying that, I did go with polished stainless bed strips and it compliments the black wood very nicely.

hello modelman. i did the same thing as tclederman, and the wood does look good. the ebony stain allows some of the woods color to show through, but in low light or at an angle, it looks black. i also have the polished stainless hardware. lots of compliments! good luck.

I went with the black on oak boards. I used thined black enamel so I could still see the grain but before the paint I sealed the wood with two good coats of Thompsons wood sealer. I am painting my bed strips gloss black. If you are going natural I would use stainless strips.
