My 53 chevy 1/2 ton has an engine with the following casting marks and am wondering if anyone can help me out with ID ?
the # on the block to the rear of the distributor o137350
the # on the drivers side head 3835918
the # on the pass side of block 3836283
other # on head 15B 913 241 570
Is this a 235 ????
I ordered parts for what I thought was a 216 engine and the parts do not fit
HELP............thanks

Might the head casting code be: 3835913 instead of 3835918 ?

Might the block casting code be: 3833633 instead of 3836283 ?

Can you post a link to a photo of the Engine Serial Number?
This code often gets messed with on a replacement engine.

Please post the head and block date casting codes.

Here are my guesses (someone will correct me, if I'm wrong):

3836233 = 1955-56 block - car or truck (mechanical lifters)
3835913 = 1954/55 head

01373501 55 Z
could that be?
0137350F 55 Z
0137350T 55 Z ?

http://www.1954advance-design.com/chev-specs/1955-1st-Chevrolet-t-ser.pdf

Most likely the codes near the starter area is:

CON 1 (not CONN) = Conveyor #1
and the Block date code:
B 3 55
B = 2 = February
3 = 3rd
55 = 1955 (is it one 5 or two 5s?)

Are you a diesel-engine person?

3836233 = 1955-57, 235 block (mechanical lifters)
3835913 = 54-62 235, 261, head

CON 1 B 3 55 or B 25 5
CON 1 =(not CONN) Conveyor #1
B = 2 = February
3 = 3rd day of month
5 = 1955

Casting number locations Click on pictures to enlarge.

0137350 155Z
0137350 = Units built
1 = more than likely a "T" = Tonawanda, NY, Plant where engine was built.
55 = 1955 Model year
Z = Type, Regular Engine, Originally installed in a Passenger Car

I believe the only difference between in a car block and a truck block.
Is the numbers/letters stamped into the flat machined boss to left of the distributor.

zeogrant,

jorb and I posted just about the same information/speculation.

The only significant difference is: I doubt that the same casting number head was used on both the 235 and the 261 heads.

The 1955 261 head codes were 3703570, 3836850 (used from 1954-1957)

Can you post a link to a photo of your engine serial number? That is where we had to speculate the most. Keep posting information and people will try to interpret it.

Here is 1955 car engine serial number information.
Here is 1955 1st-series truck serial number information.
Here is 1955 2nd-series truck serial number information.

new info...casting # on the ledge in back of distributor # 0137350T 55 Z
Previously I had 01373350155Z....so the above is correct.
also CONN is not correct...it is CON.
At this time I cannot post a picture of the engine serial number, sorry.
There are NO captain bars located anywhere so I presume it is NOT a 261 but IS a 235. ?????
Tim, I am not a diesel person.

zoegrant,

I asked about "diesel person" because I have heard the term "blow by tube" more commonly used by diesel engine people.

Blow by tube is also commonly used as a name for the road draft tube on stove bolt engines (I knew what you meant).

It looks like you now know what engine you have?

Extraneous question:

Does the body of water pump on your engine block extend above the top of the block?

The early 1955 engines (truck) had that style water pump.

1955-2nd series trucks had a water-pump body that did not extend above the top of the block.

1955 cars were not designated as 1st or 2nd series (the car body style changed at the beginning of the 1955 model year).

I am wondering if the cars use the 1st series-style engine in early 1955? I think the trucks changed to 2nd series around Mar/Apr 1955. You have an early February block.

Thanks,

J,

That is the later-style 235.

How close is the fan to the radiator?
