Hi does anyone know if you can use the original 4 speed torque tube gearbox with an open driveshaft and new rear end? I just want to make the 1/2 ton less of a mobile roadblock Thanks Jon

yes you can, find a gear box from a 56 to 67 sm420 and use it or you can change out the coupling. It not that hard or take it to a trans. shop and they can do it for you. There is a trans. shop on line that sales the part you need but I don't remember the name. root

Larger trucks also used a SM420 with an open drive shaft. 4 speeds with open drive shaft are actually more common than closed drive shaft.

You should be able to sell the enclosed drive-shaft rear-housing/cover.

Also, you should be able to sell the u-joint assembly (keep/save all parts), if you do not use it.
