I just want to make the 1/2 ton less of a mobile roadblock Thanks Jon | | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 339 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 339 | yes you can, find a gear box from a 56 to 67 sm420 and use it or you can change out the coupling. It not that hard or take it to a trans. shop and they can do it for you. There is a trans. shop on line that sales the part you need but I don't remember the name. root | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | Larger trucks also used a SM420 with an open drive shaft. 4 speeds with open drive shaft are actually more common than closed drive shaft. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | You should be able to sell the enclosed drive-shaft rear-housing/cover.
Also, you should be able to sell the u-joint assembly (keep/save all parts), if you do not use it.
