At the Winter Classic we had some good laughs about moving drill presses and other machine shop "stuff" about 6 years ago now. Thanks again for the expert services provided by the ODSS machinery moving crew that long weekend.
With no takers on my offer to move just one machine this Monday.. Adam, neighbor Shelby, Richmond friend Chuck, and I got the job done.

Here's what y'all missed out on wink

Where are the unload pictures? Or, do you have to build a building? grin

Good looking L&S.
Glad someone is saving old iron and just not trucks.
I may have to plan on a visit to your shop again, when we have more time to chat.

Thanks Victor, I was really just poking fun and we managed just fine with the help I did have.

The whole trailer is in the garage right now. I need to first sell my old lathe http://roanoke.craigslist.org/tls/5461377155.html
And another
http://roanoke.craigslist.org/tls/5461460557.html
To make room in the shop.

So there will be plenty of opportunity left for moving heavy stuff with getting the old one out and the new one in. Sometime in the next 2 or 3 weeks is the plan.

The machine was actually bought and installed new at a technical school in 1968, never been moved until yesterday. It may have never been repainted. It's in nice shape, seems wasn't used much at all but suffered some due to neglect. I'm looking forward to getting it cleaned up and useable.

I will come out to help when you install that lift down to the river. Looks good Grigg. Maybe you can teach my fascinated kid how to work that thing.

You never cease to amaze me. Very impressive move. How long did it take you to figure out removing the tires and wheels on the trailer would give you the angle you needed (not long I'm guessing).
Wish I was closer, I would have loved to help or more appropriately, learned!
Very nice.

Hambone, I'd be glad to show him a few things.

Sweet, Yes, pretty much. The trailer/axles are rated (but not legal) for about 11,000 of load in addition to the trailer. I thought 8,000 would begin to feel a little uneasy but it towed and handled just fine. Stopping distance was greatly increased as expected.

Billy, I figured it out several years ago when I moved my other lathe. Checking out the site and machine Friday I was encouraged to see the gently sloped ramp out the door, perfect for the trailer on the ground trick. On Monday We got there to find there was about a 1.5"-2" lip right at the door, which was ideal for the planks I brought. All helped for an approximately level approach and onto the trailer.

Thanks Cosmo, and thanks again for your offer.

Jim, Yes, we do have an electric winch but it's more trouble to get out and hook up. The manual come-along gives more control, slow and easy helps keep things safe with plenty of time to see what's going on and correct.

Grigg, I would have loved to help, but as a proud member of the Drill Press Movers and Riggers Guild, my hands were tied ...

ohwell

The DPMARG has a bilateral memorandum of Agreement with the International Brotherhood of Beer Hoisters though, so I can help you any time you need to do *that*

Grigg, amazing move and even more amazing acquisition. can't wait to see what comes off of that machine.
one more question, who lifted the trailer up to get the tires back on. I did not think Shelby was that strong...

Used the red highlift jack and a small Simplex railroad jack (shown in various pictures). Both at one side of the trailer and then the other side to get it high enough to slip the wheels back on.

Tonight, tomorrow, and perhaps Sunday I'll be in the shop. First making space, then moving the old lathe out, cleaning the new one, and moving it in.

If anyone wants to join in the fun I'd be very glad for the help. What I'm not so good at and could use the most encouragement on is sorting and organizing smaller tools and materials to make room.
Cleaning the new lathe before coming inside could use some help just so it doesn't take all day.
Meals provided and we could make an evening trip to the DB.

Thanks,
Grigg

Don't wish I was closer, cause family is all around Mid Mo.
I would like to see your shop again, when we have more time to talk.
Hopefully Homecoming weekend.

Shop cleaning and lathe moving went very well last night and today.
Feels good to have the new lathe in place and a somewhat more tidy shop
Uploading pictures of moving both lathes now. Same album linked earlier.

Alec, give a call before you come to make sure we'll be here.
