He is just reading the 3 as an 8. Casting numbers sometimes can be hard to read.

I just saw a head on E-bay that is in Custer WI, could save some shipping costs. He said it was fluxed and good. Be careful buying these on E-bay, not everybody is honest in their descriptions.

Looks like 383 to me. The 3's are equally proportioned top and bottom. The 8 has a smaller top portion. It sure looks like the first and third digits are symmetrical.

I do not know if this may be a Canadian head, but all the casting marks are in the wrong place for a US production head.

That's what I thought. All the heads that I have seen the casting numbers were on the outside of the valve cover not the inside. It is in California so who knows where it came from. Just saw it listed and was wondering about the number so I thought I would ask.

Well I sent a message to seller and asked if he was sure about the casting number. He replied that he was wrong, and the correct number was 3836848 and he was sorry for the confusion. So there is the answer. Thanks for the replies.

My Canadian 62 261 had an 848 head on it and the casting number was on the left mid front side on the outside of the valve cover.
