Before I start wasting too much time poking around maybe someone can help me troubleshoot Just began having starting problem. 63 Chevy pickup. When I turn the key sometimes I just get a click. After four or five tries it will start. Sometimes on the first try. Other times takes several tries. Not the battery. Starter solenoid maybe?

As long as ALL the connections are good and the system is well grounded I would go for the solenoid as the problem. Cheap easy fix. Good luck.

OK, thank you. What other connections would you look at? The wiring harness going to the ignition switch is new and the plug is on there snug so I don't think it's there. Battery is fine. Probably is the solenoid but along with this, what would generally indicate needing a new alternator as well; if you know?

Battery cables and grounds be sure to check both ends of each. Post your alternator question in the Electrical Bay forum.

Are the cables new? If not, there could be corrosion in between the connections under the insulation. I have not seen this happen personally, but have heard of it happeneing on really old cables.

Possibly a worn ignition switch too, or the contacts are a little corroded and when you go to start it there isn't enough material making contact on the connections, and when you turn the switch enough times it stops clicking and allows enough juice through to turn the starter.

As mentioned, a good starting point is to first check/replace the starter solenoid.

Good idea with the ignition switch. That's easy enough to pull and check. It's pretty old so could be dirty or worn. Thanks.
