My wife and I are staying a few days with my grandma in Oklahoma before we go overseas for vacation. My grandfather passed away a few years ago and I've been going through some of his things. I found this carb tucked away in the back of a cabinet in the garage. It's a Carter and it still has the brass tag. Best I can tell it says 078S on the first line and has a larger B7 just below it. What would this have fit originally? I'm using my phone to post this and I'm not sure if I can post pics from it but I'll give it a try.

I just ordered a carb kit for my 1940 pick up from Napa Auto parts and based on the carb number they were able to tell me what years my carb was used.

Does it have a W-1 on it or YF?

I think I finally got my pics to post. carb pics I didn't see a W-1 or a YF on it. I'll take another look at it today and see if I can spot any other marks.

Hy Q858, that is a Carter WG? series two barrel carb, they were used on some V8 Chevies in the early sixties, much less common than the Rochester 2GC, I tried to find a carb kit for one about a year ago and nobody had one in stock, hope that helps.

Thanks 3B. I see a WGD cast on the side of it. My uncle is here today and he thinks it came off one of his old cars, a 64 Fairlane. That would have been over forty years ago when he owned the car though and he's not positive.

Would this carb be desirable to a restorer, or are there better options available?

The Carter type WGD was first released in 1949, and Carter continued making them through 1972.

Chevrolet never used one as O.E.; but a number of A/M applications for Chevrolet exist. 3B - we make kits for all of them!

Q858 - guessing, based on your posts:

Carter 4078s was an A/M carb for 1964, 1965, and 1966 Chevrolet 283, replacing the 2GC Rochester. B7 would indicate a build date of February 1967.

Both the Rochesters and the Carter WGD's are excellent carbs. The WGD is infinately more tunable than the Rochester (for non-stock applications); but a carburetor that is more tunable is more difficult to tune.

To a restorer, so much junk, as it was never original.

To an enthusiast with a 283 from the above years who cares nothing about keeping his/her vehicle original and likes both fuel economy and power, the carb would have some value.

Thanks Jon. Now that I know what I'm looking at I can see the 4 stamped in the tag. 4078S it is. Think this one is going in the "keeper" pile.
