I've not yet had the front cover (timing gear cover) off of my 302 GMC. My timing is 120 degrees out of phase if I wish to use the flywheel timing marks--obviously assembled incorrectly. [#1 firing position, crank and cam, has the flywheel 120 degrees in advance of the TDC circle.] I can surely time the engine, just not using the flywheel markings made by GM. Does the crank have more than one keyway for the timing gear? I thought, but can't find a pic, showing 3 keyways.

Yes, some performance timing sets have multiple keyways, but they only allow a +/- 4° movement of the camshaft, and this isn't whats causing your issue. You either have mismatched parts like a bellhousing from an engine other than a GMC engine, or its just simply assembled incorrectly. I'm sure once you disassemble things, the problem will likely reveal itself clearly.

Every 235/261 flywheel I've looked at on ebay has three dowel pin holes- - - -chances are somebody has installed the flywheel in the wrong position.

Yes, with (3) as possible choices, that's 120° rotation with each choice.
