I tore apart my 4 speed yesterday to put new seals in it, seemed to work find just leaked alot.

anyways, in my kit i got from jim carter it didnt have the rear seal. there is a cast housing that has the speedo gear in it. And there is a helical gear i guess pressed onto the yoke shaft...anyone know the number for this transmission to find parts? it has the lever you have to pull up to get it into reverse.

does the speedo drive gear on the yoke press off? is there a mark on it so you know how far to press it back on?

any transmission info would be appreciated, as well as reccomended fluid.

thanks!

JLM,
I don't believe there is a rear seal, just a flange or deflector between the yoke shaft and the inside of the cast housing that has the speedo gear in it.

Also, two of the bolts that hold the tranny to the bell housing, the two that are accessed from the inside of the bell housing, go all the way through to the inside of the tranny case. You must put sealant on the threads of these bolts or they will leak like crazy.
I believe the speedo drive gear presses off but I have never messed with that.

I believe this is known as a GKT134 trans. I had mine apart two winters ago to replace bearings and seals and I recall the same thing.... No rear seal. I was able to take the bearings and seal to my local bearing supply house and had the parts within a few days.

I don't remember pressing the speedo gear off, but doesn't mean that I didn't!

Good luck with your build.

i pressed off the speedo gear last night, with a little heat it came off pretty easy, there is for sure a seal on it, i'll just take it to napa and see if i can find a similar one, there was also a thin metal plate that on top of the seal that had a few bolts thru it and was also spot welded at the bottom...

on the side of the transmission it has rasied markings " 5 " "GM" "590474"

on the top it has "E 16 6"

also found a bow tie with a 4 next to it, and the number 590511 on the side.

Looks like your transmission is original to the truck.

E=May
16=16th the month
6=1946

There are some bronze bushings in the 4 speed so make sure you use a gear oil that is good for "yellow metals". Some GL-4 and 5 formulations claim they are yellow metal safe, but it rarely says so on the bottles. GL-1 90 is what I use in my 4 speed.

harold 46- my transmission looks similiar to that but not the same.

i went to napa today and the guy couldnt find any seal that size at all he said, he found my rear axle seals (although they are slightly different he said its the right one)

looked online when i got home by size and found an SKF seal in the same size, number 17645. it was a 1.75 inch shaft and 2 7/8 bore seal, hopefully it works!
