It's also fairly difficult to manufacture by the original method, which is stamping. The metal is stretched between 2 die halves with a hydraulic press (like most oil pans, valve covers etc.), and where the depth is great the amount of force required is high, the alignment must be very accurate, and the dies wear out quickly.
Charley's etc. can make you an aluminum pan for a month's salary.
