My teenage son bought this truck and the current column has broken tabs, missing bearings?, basically the column moves around. The rag joint looks suspicious too. It has a manual gear box and no column shifter.
He would like to add power steering but I suggested it may create more problems and expense to a teenager on a tight budget. It's a crusty old truck never meant for daily driving. My suggestion was just to find a donor column that is functional.
That said, we've been watching for GM truck columns from the 80's but not much ever shows up in the north east. There are no pick and pull yards to peruse so we are relegated to Craigslist. Anyway an '88 Chevy van column is currently listed. Is this remotely related to a typical column?
Basically just looking for suggestions to point us in the right direction for a functional, inexpensive, and relatively painless setup. Are there other GM columns to choose from?
