The starter has burned out so I replaced it, it turns over once then sounds like the battery dies, so I bought a new battery, but same thing. I've checked the valve gaps, I can spin it by hand with the plugs out, not sure what to do. | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | Check you ground strap, if paint or rust of bad cable, you will get poor current flow if at all. BTW I've been using original 6 v starter for many years without a problem. If it only ran with the choke on, that makes me believe it was running very lean. Usually the mixture had to be richer on a cold start-up | | | | Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 17 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 17 | Also, when I turn it over the starter is sparking and smoking. I took it back and they tested the starter and it's not the problem...or so they say. | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,112 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,112 | I don't know what your description "12v six volt starter" means. If you mean that you have a 6 volt starter with a key activated solenoid, and it is hooked up to 12 volts, I would think that could be a big problem. | | | | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 3,399 Gas Pumper | Gas Pumper Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 3,399 | This could also be a problem with your Ring Gear not being the correct number of teeth for your replacement starter. That entire issue would be here: http://devestechnet.com/Home/FlywheelThe symptoms would be less than one revolution before it starts to bind up. | | | | Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 17 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 17 | Well I am 100% positive it is a 6 volt ring gear. I'll have to check out the new starter and see how many teeth it has. | | | | Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 17 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 17 | And I have converted the truck to 12 volt but maintain the 6 volt floor stomp starter. | | | | Joined: Jul 2014 Posts: 1,300 Moderator for Tons o' Fun , Co-Moderator Driveline Forum | Moderator for Tons o' Fun , Co-Moderator Driveline Forum Joined: Jul 2014 Posts: 1,300 | qdub - I cannot imagine how a new or rebuilt stomp starter could have the wrong pinion gear but you might want to check that the gear does have the 9 Teeth - and you might want to check that the pinion gear diameter measures 1.187" and the pinion shaft should measure . 5625". Hope this helps, I just went through a similar problem on my 54'. The PO did the 12V conversion and installed an incorrect 12V car starter that also has 9 teeth, has a 1.000' diameter gear and a .4787 shaft....same number of teeth, but won't engage properly, get lots of noise and other nasty stuff.

The tooth count on the starter side is the same as the 6v one, just pitched differently. Do what Dusty says and its possible they gave you the wrong animal. Good luck! | | | | Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 17 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 17 | Went back and they gave me a different one. Works great. Now just re-do the carb, might be able to go for a drive soon. | | | | Joined: Jul 2014 Posts: 1,300 Moderator for Tons o' Fun , Co-Moderator Driveline Forum | Moderator for Tons o' Fun , Co-Moderator Driveline Forum Joined: Jul 2014 Posts: 1,300 | Fantastic ! I have a 49-3100 with a 55-235 converted to 12v. I would be interested in getting one. Thanks Doug | | | | Joined: Jun 2012 Posts: 1,747 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2012 Posts: 1,747 | Just FYI, the tooth count on the starter(6 Volt and 12 Volt stomp starters) is the same. The tooth count on the flywheel is different. The tooth pitch(size) is what is different on the 6 Volt starter from the 12 Volt starter. The Shaft diameter is different as well. The Solenoid is different 6 Volt verses 12 Volt, for the starters used with the push button or key switch.
