Would it be a good idea to take a compression gauge and battery and bump the starter to check for compression? If so, what kind of numbers should I expect to see?

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

Well as to the blue one on the stand in the picbucket...
Price may seem a bit high but then ask yourself if the guy (or his surroundings) seems like the type who'd go to all the work of JUST PAINTING an engine like that and then try and sell it as a rebuilt or refreshed?
I mean if 'I' was going to the effort to make it all look that good I'd go ahead and do the mechanical while I had it apart.
If he's already building something else then He's a builder not a scammer. But that's really why it's your decision or I guess as they say down your way "trigger to pull".

Well... that definitely ain't a HiPo engine in the link (even with the international space-station air cleaner on it), so maybe a moderator can move your thread.

There's really not much "HiPo" about a Stovebolt anyway. That's what all the "yo bro, peep these spinnaz & LED ashtray mounts" forums are for.

Respectfully submitted,
Brad

Just seen it. It's in Indiana though. I appreciate the input and understand it's my decision to make. What I'm looking for is the "I'd offer $xxx" or " check the xxx for xxx" type advice since you guys are more familiar with these engines. I agree this is no longer relevant in the HiPo forum, but it all started with a LS swap conversation smile
