The rust bond can be a bugger to break. Don't get too overzealous with the hammer as if you mushroom the pin it will never drive out. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 2 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 2 | I'm about to try and remove mine . Would it be better to use heat first ?

If you are embarking on a restoration and paint condition does not matter, I would first apply heat as it tends to break the rust bond allowing penetrating oil to get into the hinge pin. I have had most success by getting the hinge a dull red/orange color. Be careful to not get too much heat to the sheet metal laminated portion as there is a risk of melting or deforming it if not careful. It may take several cycles of heat/oil/beating to get the pin to start moving. Be patient. When reinstalling, I like to use a liberal amount of antisieze on the pin. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | I love my little air impact hammer, after heat and penetrating oil, I'd use the pointed tip of an inexpensive air impact. Just pushed out some wheel studs like butter. Is it not possible to unbolt the hinge from the door frame and the door and do the pin removal in a vice where you won't scorch the paint?? Is the hinge welded into the door frame and/or the door on older vehicles?
Thanks

You could, but removing the 70 year old hinge clutch head screws typically requires the same treatment of heat and penetrating oil. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 2 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 2 | Thanks for the help, mine came out easier than I thought they would . Took me about 5mins per pin . Little heat and they popped right out .

Good luck guys!
