I'm working on a 1947 half ton, mostly original. I'm completing an engine swap and the last thing to do before I put the front clip back on is to install the exhaust.
The pipes were old, but servicable. The muffler was clearly not original and was shorter than a stock muffler by a few inches.
I ordered a new muffler and clamp from one of our vendors. The front pipe (from exh manifold to muffler) seems to be too small for a proper fit into the large end of the new muffler. The tail pipe seems to be the same diameter as the small end of the muffler. (Since the tail pipe is a smaller diameter than the pipe from the exh manifold to the muffler, this does not seem to be a "putting it in backwards" situation
)
My questions:
1) how much diameter mis-match is typical?
2) If mis-match is typical, how does one deal with large gaps and same sizes?
In parallel, I'm wondering if the pipes are not standard size and I'll be calling around to find a local shop that may have templates for this application.
