My wife and I set out for a fall drive Saturday, just over 100 miles to, and little more coming back, for a 215 mile total. Most of the trip was at 65 mph till we hit the small town limits, then back to 65 till we hit the next town. Once back towards home we hit a ton of traffic lights in the Kansas City metroplex.
I was really pleased with the way it ran, little throttle was needed to keep up with traffic, and if needed, plenty of passing power. When I filled up, I let the pump shut off on it's own, twice. Then refilled at the same station using the same pump and fill method. It used 10.25 gallons. Thats 20.7 mpg ! More then its ever got even when dead stock and driving 45 to 50 mph. I could tell all summer it wasn't using much fuel, just didn't have any idea how little.
The only problem it has now is, restarting after 10 to 15 minute. Anything less and it fires right off, same with more time. Not sure how to solve the problem yet and really don't want to mess with it much since it runs so good now. When starting after 10 minutes of setting, it's really rich and smokes till it clears up. Carbkings method of slowly opening the throttle then cranking helps, but the accelerator pumps work so good, its almost impossible to open the throttle without adding even more fuel. Once started it runs normal. I may try just a tad leaner idle mixture, then let idle little longer before shutting it off, that may burn some of the excess fuel out of the intake. On a side note, the single Mono-jet did the something, just not quite as bad.

On the hot start, begin cranking maybe 3~4 seconds before you gently give it throttle. Also, where do you have the accelerator pumps set? Maybe adjust the pumps for a smaller volume?
Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot airThe most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify. I used a stock Mono-jet on factory intake with aftermarket stock replacement camshaft, HEI ignition, t-350 automatic transmission, 3.08 rear gear, 28" tall tires, and 2 1/4' single exhaust system. | | |
