Just pulled this old beast out of the weeds after 20 years! I'm hoping to get some more info about this particular model with the rear/side oval windows. Have you seen another panel with these? Have more info on this?

Thanks!

Pictures at this link hopefully...

Hello, rustinaway,

I cannot find your photo.
I do not know how to link to a specific facebook photo, so I am unable to give you instructions.

You might want to use a free hosting site (Dropbox is free, and it has a "Public" folder, and does not have advertising.

1951 panels did not come from the factory with rear side windows (of any shape). They must have been installed by an owner or a conversion company.

Thanks for the reply. I thought they might be done by a conversion company but they really look factory so I thought I would check on here. Here are some pics hopefully...

May be a conversion for a crew...as in railroad crew or highway crew?? Maybe the previous owner can shed some light on it, or maybe the one even before them?? My curiosity is killing me!

It's hard to say, My dad has owned it since the mid 70's and all I know before that is that he bought it from a guy somewhere in Montana. He told me he's never seen another one with those windows and he had never looked too far into it. I figured someone on here might know though.

the windows look "factory" because they're done the proper way, as any auto glass shop could do .... back when lots of trades people used panels [before "vans"], many wanted a bit more daylight in the cargo area, or wanted better vision in tight places, pretty common modification .... and I wouldn't call them "oval", they're like all the windows, rectangles with rounded corners .... much easier to put rubber seals around than squared corners

good luck bringing the old rig back to life, keep us up on your progress

Bill

Looks like it could have been a Rural School Bus. Color is right. Check for set holes, extra marker light holes on top and fenders.
Or any other oddities.
If the yellow is the bottom color, State or County vehicle, work crews, utility, etc.

Thanks for the replies! It may have been a rural school bus at some point. Looks like there is some possible lettering under the top coat of green paint. So far it looks like 3 coats of paint: top is green, yellow in the middle and the original appears to be dark green.

Green was the default color unless otherwise specified.
Probably was a stock unit on the lot and the cust. took it and made do with it as needed.......line truck, crew wagon, utility repair, school bus,etc etc etc.

Personally it looks more like they were put in after it was built. Had it been done by a coach shop that transformed them into school buses & etc they would have put an inner frame/bracing around the windows. Every panel truck I have seen that had the smaller windows installed by a coach shop(the factory didn't do them) had a frame/bracing like THIS around the inside window opening.....joe

Thanks for all the info. Has anyone seen another panel with these same windows? Or does anyone have a picture of one?

Thanks again!

Look through the Stovebolt Gallery (link in the menu at the top of this page). Look in 47-55 Advance-Design Trucks .

Here is a '47 1-ton "school bus".

Searched the gallery and found a couple similar, but nothing quite the same. Thanks again for the info and I'll update on here as I gain progress on getting the beast back on the road (as slow as that may be).

Do NOT be discouraged about the amount of time it may take. I bought mine in 93, drove it once 12yrs ago, my health declined & I'm having someone to do the work for me. Not the same but it's getting done...joe
