Is there supposed to be a gasket on the water pump of a 1950 216 / 235 engine? Either between block and pump or rear pump cover and pump..... Mine is leaking from behind the pump but dont see a gasket listed in the catalogs. Thanks

The shop manual does mention a plate gasket there; it also says "Replace Water Pump" as the remedy for all problems. Photo credit to Chevrolet Motor Co. with this picture of the engine diagram that shows the gasket in between the plate & pump AND between pump & block..

$1.95

plate-to-pump gasket - in Step 8 directly under Figure 114

pump to block gasket - in Step 17 directly under Figure 59

Both those gaskets should come in an engine gasket set. Maybe someone knows the part numbers for the gaskets when bought separately?

You will need a gasket set to match the year of your water pump (if the year/style of water pump does not match the one used on that engine/block - for, example: a newer style block with an older style water pump, using an adapter plate).

Make sure that the water isn't coming from the weep hole at the bottom of the pump toward the rear. You might need a mirror to see it. This would indicate a bad internal water pump seal.
