| | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 | The supposed effect of VX-6 and other, similar additives was supposed to break down "sulfation", the formation of the crystalline form of lead sulfate that accumulates on battery plates when a battery is left in a partially-discharged condition for an extended period of time. The problem is that most battery failures are mechanical, not chemical. The reactive material falls off the plate grids and accumulates at the bottom of the cell group, where it cannot enter into the charge/discharge chemical reaction. Additives don't help the mechanical deterioration of battery cell groups.
Lead sulfate is a normal byproduct of battery discharging, but on a freshly-discharged cell plate it is a spongy material that readily reconverts into lead on the negative plate and lead dioxide on the positive plate as the battery recharges. Crystalline lead sulfate can be broken down by repeatedly discharging and recharging the battery, but it's a long, slow process. Additives might help slightly, but the series of tests my father and I ran under pretty scientific conditions at Nashville Auto-Diesel College in preparation for rewriting the school's battery and charging system training program didn't show any measureable advantage to using additives such as VX-6.

I remember the Sears Diehard "forever" batteries in late-60s/early-70s, when my Suburban was my main vehicle. I do recall them having a 6v version, but I had converted my 1954 Suburban to 12v when I blew a 235 and installed a 12v 1960 261.
I could not afford the Diehard, but if I had bought one, I wonder if the lifetime warranty would still be good (good for the life of the vehicle). | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | During the time I worked for them (22 years), I only recall maybe one or two warrantees from someone that had bought one of those. I do recall a notice form corporate saying that they would honor the warrantee for one final replacement from the original purchase, then the warrantee would be whatever the pro rate was on the replacement battery. IIRC, at the time, there was a 5 year and 6 year total warrantee battery being offered.
With the rate that Sears in the way to going out of business (the CEO is an idiot who could care less about the company, the employees, and the customers), I doubt they'll be honoring the warrantee on anything within the next couple years. But that's getting off topic.
