I seem to have a little bit of up and down play in my steering wheel, or column. Anyone know if that is typical or, if not, where do I start to tighten things to alleviate the play? It's not the main nut that holds the steering wheel on, more like in the shaft itself somewhere along the column. Thanks.

The lower brg. is stuck to the shaft. It is supposed to float on the shaft so the spring under it pulls the strg. wheel down against the upper brg.

The lower steering column bearing is well known for failing and eating into the steering shaft. For more on that check out post #25 here

Hope this helps thumbs_up

Thank you. Could have something to do with my horn problem. Can that be just be tightened? And if so, where would I start, somewhere in the column or at the steering gearbox? Or does that require a re-build? Haven't worked on steering before so I'm not that familiar with it.

I'd pull the entire column out of the truck and rebuild it. Sounds like a lot of work but it really isn't that hard to do.

The lower bearing slides onto the steering shaft from the steering wheel... so the column has to come out to replace that lower bearing.

My link above has instructions thumbs_up

Thank you. I think I'll do that. What parts would I be looking to replace, if any, when I do the rebuild?

You will need a lower brg. & possibly the upper brg. If it has a shifter in it you might need a shift tube.
