Anyone know if that is typical or, if not, where do I start to tighten things to alleviate the play? It's not the main nut that holds the steering wheel on, more like in the shaft itself somewhere along the column. Thanks.

It is supposed to float on the shaft so the spring under it pulls the strg. wheel down against the upper brg. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. For more on that check out post #25 hereHope this helps _____ John | | | | Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 37 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 37 | Thank you. Could have something to do with my horn problem. Can that be just be tightened? And if so, where would I start, somewhere in the column or at the steering gearbox? Or does that require a re-build? Haven't worked on steering before so I'm not that familiar with it.

Sounds like a lot of work but it really isn't that hard to do. The lower bearing slides onto the steering shaft from the steering wheel... so the column has to come out to replace that lower bearing. My link above has instructions _____ John | | | | Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 37 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 37 | Thank you. I think I'll do that. What parts would I be looking to replace, if any, when I do the rebuild?

If it has a shifter in it you might need a shift tube. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | |
