I have it narrowed down to a 292 or a 350. I know either way I will have to do some modifications (engine cradle for sure on both). I have the cradle ready to go in just waiting on my decision on the engine. My first question is how will I know where to bolt up the cradle on the frame and secondly at what angle should the engine set? Lastly if I went with the 292 and used a early 70's SM465 4-speed transmission will the stock transmission crossmember still be used or will I need a aftermarket transmission cradle? | | | | | Joined: May 2015 Posts: 236 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2015 Posts: 236 | Cradle placement will depend on several items that you choose. Angle is best to set to match pinion angles on rear differential or as close as possible. If the rear is 4deg up then engine usually is 4 down. (straight line setting).
After considering pinion angle, level heads are next desired. forward/rear placement is space available. Basically clearance for 350s distributor and in the front fan blades and room for fan shroud. You can not do much to adjust rear clearance on the 350 but you can do mod on the front to gain space.
Side to side centered is first choice but some left or right shift to clear obstacles (I E steering). Choice of exhaust will also help here with early chevy rams horn exhaust being the tightest.

I believe there is a Tech Tip on this.

It will look more natural. The V-8 will run better. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,061 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,061 | I didn't think a 292 was an easy swap/ replacement for 235. What is required to make it work?
