Hey, I'm getting ready to get rid of the old oil filter from my 235, it's the kind that uses U bolts to hang from the intake manifold. I adding a fenton intake w/ 2 carbs . I'm thinking of bolting a new remote spin-on type from the inner fender below the alternator. My old oil lines a long enough, but I'm wondering if the fittings will work with the new set-up which come either 3/8 or 1/2 pipe thread.I'm not sure what the old ones are. They sell a kit with fittings and hose on Speedway, but it's $38. Anybody done this switch and can help me out?

You will need some kind of restriction as was built in to your old filter can.

By restriction I guess you mean the brass reducer on the intake into the old filter, So I can find all the fittings I need to make the old hoses fit into the new spin-on bracket, if they are both NPT types/

Usually on those bypass filter cans there is a pipe up the center. About a third the way down from the top is a 1/16" hole and that is how the oil gets to the outlet.

No, that's not what he means. There must be a restrictor installed in the return line that reduces the flow through the spin-on filter to avoid starving the engine for oil. I use a Holley carburetor jet drilled out to a 1/16" diameter orfice, threaded into the reducer bushing for the return line. A 1/4-28 thread is close enough to allow the jet to be threaded into the reducer bushing.

So by slowing the flow thru the return line the oil is backed up in the filter and that slows the flow entering the filter?

Either line can have the restrictor- - - -the downstream location works best. That duplicates the flow the original canister filter has, which is MUCH better than a spin-on, BTW. Why not just mount the canister on the inner fender or the firewall, and use longer flex lines?

I was thinking of the mess compared to a spin on. I'll do more looking and measuring now, Some kind of wedge shaped spacer or another bracket to hold it level against the inner fender. Is it better at filtering because it is bigger and filters more oil at a time?

Since the full volume of oil going to the bearings does not have to pass through the filter, the pores of the element can be tighter. Most bypass filters actually do a better job of filtering than a full flow, they just don't filter all the oil at once.
