I know this question has probably been posted on here thousands of times, so please bear with me. I have a 1951 Chevy 6400 that has a 1960 Chevy 235 in it. Currently it has a blown head gasket and I'm not sure what else. What would the proper engine for this truck be. Would it have come with a 235 or a 216? I have a line on a complete engine for 50.00. The only thing is the seller is not sure which one it is. How can I identify which one he has? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

In 1951, the smaller trucks came standard with a 216 engine; and, a 235 engine was not available as a factory option, except for 4000 series trucks.

Your 6400 series truck would have come from the factory with a 235 engine.

Here are the details.

You can usually ID the year of a low-pressure 216/235 by the Engine Serial Number that is pressed into the block to the rear of the distributor.

Obtain and post that code and you will get help/confirmation on the size/year engine.
