I acquired a 1956 3600 in great shape for a 50 year old, and am in process of bringing her back to glory. Not sure what to do about this old undercoating tho... surely there has to be a better way that a chisel and hammer to remove it? I'm leaning toward trying a torch and a putty knife, unless someone has an easier/cleaner way. Thanks much

| | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | | Anonymous Unregistered | Why remove it? If it is doing the job, leave it in place. If you do have to remove it for rust repair or personal pref I would suggest a torch with a low flame. It will smoke and stink like heck but afterwards you can scrap or wire wheel the remainder off. Just hope you do not have neighbors close by who are enjoying the outdoors when you fire it up. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 29 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 29 | Good question. I've been using a chisel and hammer. It's not easy.

Again, if the U/coat is sound, maybe just leave it? I did find a product by Share Corp. called Safetey Solvent spray on wipe off take's a bunch and smells like the devil. Heating, chesel and hammer, sharp scraper, it is a job. As close as I can figure it is a tar base, but when your done it sure makes it easier to work on those things.

It looked like tar & chip road resurface and made me think the truck once belonged to a paving contractor or a roofing company. Did anyone else have gravel stuck in the goop? The whole underside was coated with this gravel. Still can't get off the fenders. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 84 Member | | Member Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 84 | I think I chiseled 50 lbs. of that stuff off of mine. Can't vouch for it personally, but I have had good luck with other products I have purchased from them. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 29 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 29 | I removed the undercoat on my fender flaers and bed sides with lots of MEK and a 1-1/2 stiff putty knife/scraper. A little help with a scotchbrite pad in my die grider got the stuff in the corners and hard to reach areas. | | |
