I am having trouble pressing my new timing gear on the new cam shaft. I have already damaged one. The gear is not pressing on straight by the keyway. Any tips or any one else have a similar problem. Thanks

Try filing the top of the key a little to keep it from dragging on the gear hub. The key is more of an alignment device than an actual drive lug- - - -the press fit carries most of the driving load, so the key does not have to be a perfect fit in the slot. Also, a little anti-seize compound on the parts will help them slip over each other without compromising the fit. An aluminum gear can be heated to about 250 degrees and it will virtually fall into place- - - -I don't think I'd try that with a fiber gear, however.

Put the gear into an oven at 250-300 degrees for 1/2 hour, then use welding gloves and a dead blow mallet to install it instead of a press. Just handle it quickly, as it will begin to shrink as soon as it contacts the camshaft hub. Don't forget to install the thrust plate first! I've also done the heating with a Propane torch right at the workbench by placing the gear on a piece of steel plate and heating inside the bore hole until a drop of water flashes to steam instantly when it's dripped onto the gear at the outer edge.

One thing I learned the hard way was to put pressure only on the hub part. They are not very sturdy.
