Local shop wants $30 to blast my tailgate. Is that a good price or a rip-off?

You could always do what I did. Spend a thousand bucks on a nice blast cabinet, then another thousand on a 5 Hp 2 Stage air compressor, then another couple hundred for a dryer and a regulator.. Throw in another hundred or so for pipe and fittings.. When you fire up that compressor , watch your electric meter spin off the side of the house..Now you are in the blasting business..

30 bucks is a good deal, grab it.

The answer to Ken's question about how much I spent to have my rolling chassis media blasted, is $170. However that included three of the bed crossmembers, two small and the big rear one that runs under the tailgate. I chose media for the reason that it is not going to be as abrasive in moving parts, leaf springs, brakes etc, if I didn't get every last granual when cleaning it up. Sand can cause alot more problems. I do plan to clean very thoroughly, but you never know. It didn't cost anymore in this case. So why not? I hope this helps in your decision whether to have you tailgate done for $30.

Round here blast sand is $7.50 a bag. Figure at least one bag for a tailgate. Add in the blaster, hood, respirator and other necessaries, and you'll need to go into business to pay for it all! I blasted two wheels for my truck, took 4 bags and I used the equipment at our museum. That includes a 3 phase compressor, which ran all the time when I blasted. When I get newer wheels for the front, I will pay for someone to blast them.

The only other way is to rent and undustrial air compressor and media tank, but still runs around $200 a day for the diesel compressor and the sand blaster tank, and you still have the media to buy and the fuel, But if your are going to do a complete chassis it might be a cheaper way to go or if you have a friend in the construction business they might know where you can get a loan of the jack hammer type tag along compressor, as they work really good for air volume and cheap to run, 200cfm@ 110 psi and uses around 3L of fuel per hour, cheaper than hydro.

i sweep up my sand and pour it through a flour sifter and reuse it.

I'm thinking about converting my extra stovebolt engines into an air compressor, one driving, one compressing, on a trailer. Anyone want one?
That should give enough cfm for blasting. Now I gotta find two radiators, a governor, and a trailer to mount them on.
