Would a 5531 aux transmission be a good match for a 1948 2 ton with a 1954 or possible 1957 235 engine for power. Just looking for a little more highway speed. Wouldn't be for long distances. Only when I can't go the back roads.

My '54 GMC 2 Ton has a 5531 backing a Clark 5 speed, also with Overdrive;it seems to run pretty happy with the Clark in 4th(Direct) and the Brownie in Over (0.74:1). With 38" tires and a 6.40 two speed,it gets about 66 mph at 2750 RPM. What tire diameter and axle ratio are you set up with? Here's a link to the number cruncher I like to use to figure this stuff out.

Yes, it is and was intended for just that.
Be sure it has an overdrive gear, some don't and even if it is OD in 3rd they offered different ratios, some faster than others.

The 5531 should work great with your truck and the engines listed. I have a 5831C in my 46 2-ton. It gives a bit more usable speed on the highway, and has improved the performance in traffic, especially with a load on the back. Also, without a load, it has allowed me to start from a stop in 3rd under, giving a good burst of speed for merging into traffic. As Grigg said, check the ratios in yours and make sure you have some that jive with your driving goals.

I posted awhile back a thread detailing some of my driving experiences. The thread was titled Auxiliary Transmission Ride Along.

Well, I missed out on it. I was at the swap meet yesterday and saw it, and I wasn't familiar enough to know if it would work for me. It was .... this is the sad part.... $75. I couldn't get back there today to see if it was still available. I hope someone got it that could use it. It was a bit of a pig in a poke. Also, did have the linkage.

Hy Super55, Paul I saw it today with a sold sign on it, so I just assumed you had purchased it, I didn't even ask what it went for. I have not seen many of them for sale and especially not with the mounts and remote shifter, if I had seen it before you I would have bought it for sure, sorry you missed it. Ask me to show you a couple of them still in trucks if you come to my pick a nick this year.

Different companion flanges come on these, Google 'companion flanges' and Spicer will tell you everything you need to know.
