Don't think a picture would add much to describe these. Two steel items 1/4" thick by 1 1/4" x 2 1/2". There are 2 7/17 holes on 7/8" centers. Been trying to match them up but not found anything that matches yet. And this is on my '40 Chev 1/2 ton with 235 engine.

Each has two 7/16" holes. Do they maybe go between the bell housing and the stomp pedal mounts? The holes line up there and there is a place on each side. Holes are wider than the bolts though.

Just thinking points...

Bracket? shape? Flat? rectangle with no radius corners? I guess when you are missing something you will know it.

They are flat steel plate with a slight bend on the edge of one of the long sides.

The seller says they go on the bolt nearest engine and only 1 of the 2 holes are used. Geez, I still don't remember taking them off.

The frontof the cab bolts rigid to the frame and behind the seat back the bolts springs and reinforcment plates are used to secure the rear of the cab to the frame. This is because the frame twists a lot. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 1,438 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 1,438 | Right on the bolts shown GW but I'm just referring to the 2 plates shown.

It appears I put the plates on the bottom. Because there are two, could be left side, right side. Can't be that many places with a hole pattern like that. Unless they are from your lawn mower! The sharp, stick up edge also leads me to think holding/clamping something down tight, like rubber, material or maybe metal. I don't know 40's trucks though. I know I have seen that piece on TF trucks I've had but can't remember and don't have any now. I keep thinking door latch/catch or tailgate catch? Barn door catch on Panels/Burbs? Lift gate catch? But there are no wear marks so probably not that category. The big holes, if they are for bolts, are for a major strength item. Clearance hole for TWO! 3/8 bolts.

I do not know if the '40 hardware and assembly is the same. The cab is believed to have never been removed previously. Judging from the rust and wear on wood and rubber bushings that would seem to be the case. Why the two hole plate/washer was used as shown, at the front of the cab on each side, is unknown. That looks like it 46Sparky. I can see the angled edge too. Looks like I can put this one to bed. I didn't consider it being on the bottom side of the frame. Thanks to all for nailing this one down.

The plate is a frame reinforcement. The springs go in the cab at the rear, behind the seat, and under the cab at the front of the gas tank. Have fun. | | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 135 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2009 Posts: 135 | I'm not sure what you are working on but those same reinforcements are used on the bottom of the from cab mount bolts on '31-'35 (possibly '36 high cab). They are not on my '36 low cab. I believe the extra hole is offset to the rear. Why not one hole in the center???? Mike | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | Well if they are "reinforcements"/stiffeners, then the turn up (angled edge) is to stiffen the two hole plate? Much like steel angle is stiffer than flat plate. But why not just use angle? The two hole is weird? So it can shift from frame style to frame style to clear something? Or second hole is to clear a rivet head or other stick up? I like trying to figure out old stuff.

Zero, zilch, nada. So tend to agree with Wirth.

What else am I going to do with it? I'll bet I'm not the first that forgot where they went so didn't replace them. Since they were there from at least '40-'46 seems like GM thought they were necessary. Anyway these 2 have a home.

Guess I'll have to crawl under the '37 to see if these doodads are there too. It sure seems odd these would be used as a frame stiffeners. Not saying they weren't or were, just don't know and wonder. If frame integrity was a consideration why would these be that small and cover only that section? Also, GW's photos indicate these were on the cab rear instead at cab front as shown in the photo link I provided. So, there appears to be factory assembly differences?
The second hole doesn't make sense either. I'll check to see if there is a rivet or bolt or anything else that cause a need.
Update: The '37 doesn't have the two hole stiffner plate reinforcement.
