Just got my frame back after sandblast and primer. Question is what would be the best type of paint to use to finish it? Epoxy or enamel or ???. Oh yeah the frame was primered with zinc coating.

Black epoxy and then black urethane over that. But I will tell you that the best way is to do all this with an vinyl wash etching primer first. You do it all over sandblasted metal adn you don't have to sand any of them. Just wait the flash time on the tech sheet and do one after another, the whole job takes about three hours.

Martinsr is right - best way to do it. I've also known people that just sandblast, wipe it down with MEK, and then shoot with DP-90. Wears like iron, great (and easy) for a driver. Of course, you can also do the POR-15/Zerorust thing too.

DP-90 is black PPG epoxy primer.

5121 is a black epoxy primer made by Sherwin Williams sold under the M-S line at NAPA auto parts stores is another one.

What's vinyl wash? That's different from ordinary self-etching primer?

"Vinyl wash" is a very thin etching primer. It has a PVC in it ( the "V" in PVC is "vinyl") and gives the highest in corrosion protection. It is different in that you can't paint over it, it is only about .5 mil. Where a regular etch prime would be up to 1.5 mil as applied. All it takes is one medioum coat, very fast appication. It has no body to it and looks transparent, but does its job.

Who makes this vinyl wash self-etching primer? So after I sandblast my frame, wipe it down, then I spray that, then the PPG black epoxy DP-90, then black urethane? How much primer and paint do you think my '53 frame will need? 1/2 gal. paint? Maybe I'll use the Sherwin Williams primer to save money.

I know I've said this before but I think the shinest part of a truck should be the body

If you make everything shine truck just doesn't look right.

I use 'Used Car' detail paint.....Do have to etch stuff's kindda waxy don't have to prime...nothing
It drys over anything and you don't have to look like a diver to safely apply it.
When done you can strike it with a hammer and it doesn't crack chip or nothing.
I used to use Oscar's I still have a gallon mixes 20:1 with water or lac. thinner
20 gal goes a long way!
As long as it does I'm not lookin for anything else.

Talk to your local detail or radiator shop I'm sure the still sell something really good and really easy

Just my idea..........

First off you can have the store mix you up a flat black.

The etch is M-S number 8827 available at NAPA stores. Or S-W number is E2G973. PPG's is DX1791 It is very transparent and you just put on one med wet coat. One the color you could get PPG's "OMNI" or M-S "MSU" Both are about $100.00 a sprayable gallon as I remember.

Thanks for all the useful information. Sorry for the late reply. I'm still doing a bit of patching on the frame rail end before blasting onto the frame paint.
