Anyone had their gauges rebuilt by Classic Parts? I pulled mine apart today and to be honest I don't know if they even work or not. I'm installing a new wiring harness and none of the gauges were hooked up when I started pulling it apart.

In the catalog it says to enquire for price... Was wondering what people have paid for them. Also, is there anyway to see if they work prior to sending them in? Thanks,

Jonny

Jonny, I won't attempt to tell you how but someone should be along later and give you some guidance. There is a refacing kit available for all the gauges for probably 15 bucks and you can do it.
Note: Checking prices you can see its expensive in most cases to get them rebuilt. I ordered the new small gauges from the Truck Shop in Ca. for much less than a rebuild and have been running them for a couple years with no problems.

The gauges can be bench tested before spending your hard earned money.

The Oil Pressure can be hooked up to an air compressor that has it's air regulated down to about 15 pounds...see if the compressor gauge matched the dash gauge.

The Temp Sender can be put in a pot of water on the stove and tested. Use the wifes cooking therometer to compare readings.

The Fuel Gauge works by varying the Ground/Negitive side of the circuit. Hook 6V + to the IGN or + terminal on the gauge, Ground the gauge housing to battery - and connect a wire from the gauge Sending Unit Terminal to Battery -. If you make and break the gauge sending unit wire you should see the gauge reading do from Full and Empty.

The Ammeter should really be checked in a running car or truck. To bench test you can hook a 6V + to the Bat terminal and a load of some sort like a good heater fan motor from the other terminal on the Ammeter to the + wire on the heater and then connect the heater Ground - to the battery. The gauge should read discharge with the fan running...clear as mud right!

Hope this helps.

Jonny, I purchased a classic parts the white Euro speedometer and gauges set for $450.00.
1948 - 53 Chevy/GMC - Speedometer: 100 MPH reading with all new rebuilt components. Gauge Cluster: 60 lb. oil, 12 volt fuel extended capillary tube for V8 or modern 6 cylinder engines. There is an additional core charge of $125. ** Original cores need to be sent in for rebuild. They need the temperature probe from original core you send in. The gauges worked fine the first time I fired up the engine. To me it was better to purchase a rebuilt set, that's done professionally. Very happy, it took about three weeks to receive them.

Thank you gentlemen for all of your responses. Looks like I have some decisions to make as to replacing them or not. I am unsure as to what route I'm going to end up taking with the truck, so don't want to spend a bunch of $$ on new looking gauges while the rest of the truck looks like crap!
