Hi Stovebolt world....

So I am fiddling around with my 1952/53 Chevy Howard Knapp truck and as always cant wait to get it rolling....been thinking about something to do after this one is running....I got it home in April of 2014, dragged in the garage in October of 2014...it is now March of 2015...he is still not running yet but I am already thinking about getting rid of it...

So how long do you folks keep your trucks once you get them up and running????

Any insight would be great...

MikeC

It hasn't crossed my mind yet. I've had it almost 10 years and been on the road about 4.

Up to 44 years with the Suburban, and I'll keep at least two of them until my daughter inherits them (three trucks).

The biggest one is not an emotional attachment and it might be sold/traded in the future (it should be finished this summer). (finished cab back on frame) (vacuum/oil plumbing mocked-up - ready for wiring and radiator)

I did have one for about 5 years, that I simply got running safely/reliably (with a "souped/dressed up" 261) before I traded it for labor from my young friend, Dave. He is still paying-off with skilled-labor (10 years later) and he still drives his boys in it on special occasions (he added seat belts).

I will sell the wife before I.........

I am actually planning to reduce some of my own inventory by selling one of my completed vintage Mustangs. Mustang friends are shocked by the news, but it's life and I truly love my truck.

I've had mine for about 9 years, have been working off and on for much of that. I go in spurts depending on money and if I am busy doing yard work or not. No idea when I will turn loose of Ole, I know my son has no interest in my stuff.

Unless a major crisis happens where I have to raise a lot of money my '38 will pass to my son. There's a bit of a story that goes with my coupe. This hits the high spots. It's more of a family member than a toy.

I never plan on selling my collector stuff. Once they're a part of the family they're permanent.

On the other hand, you said you are thinking of getting rid of it. That's perfectly normal. I love finding them and refreshing them back to life. If I kept everyone since retirement, I would have about 12-13. So for whatever reason, you want to sell and get another, that's as fun as keeping an heirloom. Either way you're a hoarder or a flipper. smile

To me it's kind of nice to know I've got 12-13 "children" out there being enjoyed by someone.
It's sometimes all about where you live and how much space you have and if "you know who" is good with having 2,3,4.........

Money goes into the car/truck/motorcycle fund....but never comes out. Been doing that for 35 years. If I sell something, it goes back into the fund, or into another project.

I have 3 ADs. Two of them I originally planned on keeping. The third one I bought for a song to be restored and sold to finance the restoration of one of the keepers. Then my son decided he wanted a truck. So now I am keeping all 3 in the family.
Couldn't be happier.

At the moment I have no plans to get rid of any of my stuff. I'm sure that will change at some point. One thing is for certain--if I still have them when I draw my last breath, they will immediately belong to someone else the second that occurs! Whether or not it's someone of my choosing will depend on what, if any, arrangements I have made.

Put it this way:

I bought my '46 in 1985. Got married, then divorced - kept the truck. Got married again, then divorced again - still have the truck. March 21 of this year was the 30th anniversary of its purchase. Now, if I could just find a wife I wanted to keep around that long...

A belated happy anniversary to you, David Bush. You two seem to have weathered the two big storms well together.

I have NO plans to ever sell "Maters Cousin"! Though in the 4 years I have owned my truck .....I cannot count the offers I have had to buy! Some of my friends have heard the offers and said I was nuts for not selling! One guy told me whatever price I wanted, he would pay.

I do have a plan for the truck after I am gone........ gonna SURPRISE everybody!!!!

Some folks like the "fixing." I like the "having." 23 Years a daily driver and counting. I won't sell it even after they take my keys away.

Stranger, what's your surprise? People have been buried in their classic cars before!
