I am having a blast with my 61 daily driver. My e brake (pull handle style) isn't working. I am trying to figure out where I can find an exploded diagram so I can figure out if I am missing parts on the "under the frame" bracket or if I can adjust it and roll on. Trying to keep everything classic! Thanks for taking the time to read this | | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 1,718 Moderator: 60-66 Trucks; North Eastern Bolters | | Moderator: 60-66 Trucks; North Eastern Bolters Joined: May 2007 Posts: 1,718 | | | | | | Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 7 | thanks so much for helping me out! I have a much better idea of what is supposed to happen but I have a clue to figure out. The assembly of the "Balance bar" area under the truck seems to be missing a second spring. I couldn't see from the links you sent. I have communicated with AutoZone and Napa, and they don't know what I am talking about. There may not be a second spring, but everything else seems to be working right: The pull handle, cables are hooked up and moving.. Thanks again for any suggestions you may have, I am determined to get more life out of the e brake system I have. | | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 1,718 Moderator: 60-66 Trucks; North Eastern Bolters | | Moderator: 60-66 Trucks; North Eastern Bolters Joined: May 2007 Posts: 1,718 | Only one spring. Pulls the center bracket back towards the rear to release the tension on the cables to the wheels. The front cable attaches to the front hole in bracket. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 7 | right on! I believe my cables are stretched out and I can get a rebuild kit. glad to know I have all the hardware, I was worried that I needed to find obsolete parts. AT any rate, I am enjoying running original stuff until I wear things out and upgrade. I like the classic clicks and whirrs.. Thanks again for your help. I plan to keep the truck a daily driver as I make upgrades, very fun. | | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 1,718 Moderator: 60-66 Trucks; North Eastern Bolters | | Moderator: 60-66 Trucks; North Eastern Bolters Joined: May 2007 Posts: 1,718 | Have fun. I also like to find and install the original bits and pieces. The Clovis pins and cotter pins were new though. Clean it all well by various means, Draino, Solvents, Wire Brushes...and so the Cables slide nicely in the now perfectly clean and no kinks Shrouds. Inspect for damage or injury and repair or replace as needed...lube everything really well, and put it all back on.
Then you are good for a long time, and it will work properly and be a joy.
That is what I did on my 1960 P-20 Step Van, and it is so nice now to be able to use the functional and well adjusted Parking Brake if I want...it works great now. It puts a smile on my face every time!
And then too, for doing this, one understands the whole Emergency Brake or Parking Brake system from Stem to Stern...one has the Mental Model of it in one's Head from then on...no more mysteries about any of it.

Are you manually pushing on pawl so that is catches in tooth or are you manually releasing it to release brake? Seems like it's the spring on trigger/pawl. The unit comes out to bench very easily. One cotter pin, one clevis pin, 3 bolts. There is also a linkage return spring, I don't think that is what you are having trouble with?

I was able to find a metal crimp at HD and slide it over the end of the cable and smash it on with a set of vice grips So far it works fine.
