For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Just checking to see if anyone has had any luck find a source or interchange for inner and/or outer grease seals for the front of '42 - '46 1 1/2 tons.
I will also put this in "Parts Wanted" but had to wonder about any interchange that might do the job as well. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,384 | Did you try your local bearing/gear supplier? part # or OD, ID and thickness will work. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy Tango, the seal I found is actually a felt encased in metal the dimensions are I.D 2.063 (2 1/16"), O.D. 3.154, thickness .25 (1/4") part number is National 5756, there was an old C/R part number 20669 that was a rubber lip seal, but it may have been discontinued, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Thanks All --- below is a link to a pic of this rascal. Local parts houses have had no luck interchanging. '46 1.5 Ton Inner Grease Seal | | | | | Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,384 | That is a felt seal in a metal housing. Have found those in period farm tractors. Take the 2 metal pieces apart and replace the felt. I bought some at the hardware store (not much selection) or the fabric store. Cut it for a tight fit and oil it lightly when you re assemble it. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy Tango, what are the dimensions of that seal/felt you have? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | I'll have to get the measurements over the weekend. And good to know the felt can be replaced but one of the pair has the metal pretty well smashed up. If I had something like a press I might be able to straighten it out...but I don't. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Thanks to All and good news --- I found some NOS seals on Ebay and took a chance...they FIT!.
For anyone else shopping for these seals, the original box reads...
NAPA Standard #877
Don't know yet if there is a current interchange avail but at least we now have a somewhat newer number. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,384 | Great find and thanks for posting the number. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Just occurred to me...is there a place on the forum where we could permanently post various part & interchange (updated) numbers as they are found? Would be a HUGE asset to both current & future builders. Could create lists based on year, model, part, etc.
Just a thought. Anyone else? | | |
