I have a 1950 3600 with a 1954 motor that I just got home. My shade-tree mechanic did some work on it for me - which included installing an alternator. From my understanding this now means I am running 12v.
The wiring is a complete nightmare, with many random wires running everywhere, most of which are cut, spliced, respliced and then spliced again. My best bet at this point is to just start over with the wiring. I have been looking around at harnesses, but $600 is a little out of my budget right now. I've looked on eBay, LMC truck etc but am not sure what to go with. I don't want to go with the factory replacement as from my understanding, I would not be using the 6v parts.
If I were to buy a universal 12v harness, what would that mean for my gauges, lights, radio etc? This is where I get pretty confused. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Jonny

It doesn't look like this comes with any type of fusebox or anything. Is this something I/d need to purchase separately? Thanks again, Jonny

PLus they gave back to the site, Haven't installed, not an informercial. your tails and stop should already have fuses on the firewall.
Many of us add a fuse box.

Just a thought/idea Dan Are their harnesses 12v with alternator? I didn't see it mentioned on there like it is on the Classic Parts site? Thanks!

It didn't have a fuse box, and I decided not to add one. As he said there are (or should be) two fuses on the firewall for the tail/stop lights.
I don't plan on adding many aftermarket things to my truck... its all pretty much "stock" (no radio, speakers, extra lights, gizmo's, etc), so the few accessories (like turn signals) are run from the accessory post on the ignition switch. It was really pretty simple to run the wires, took me about a day, maybe two days to figure out the turn signal wiring. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | I used a universal wireing kit from Speedway. It has a mini fuse block with 12 fuses. Each wire is marked every few inches. It has 2 flashers & headlight connectors. $150. You can't buy all that wireing & connectors yourself for that. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | There are no '6 volt' or '12volt, parts on a wiring harness. All the harnesses will be good for 12 volts. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 195 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 195 | When I rewired my truck i just bought some wires in diffrent colours and made my own harnass with a fusebox. cost my about 50 bucks or so. Takes some time, but then again you can wire it as nice as you want! (I have been wiring a lot of trucks on my former job, so thats why i made a harnass myself, it isn't really that difficult on old trucks like these) Chevrolet 3100 Year: 1951 engine: inline 6 217CI Transmission: Manual 3-Speed. 12Volt. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2014 Posts: 120 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2014 Posts: 120 | I bought one from gearhead world on ebay but haven't installed it yet (will in a few weeks) $139 12 volt 24 circuit with fuse box and all wiring is marked as to where it goes and has a easy to read instruction manual.

Thanks again!
