Folks,

I have a 1950 3600 with a 1954 motor that I just got home. My shade-tree mechanic did some work on it for me - which included installing an alternator. From my understanding this now means I am running 12v.

The wiring is a complete nightmare, with many random wires running everywhere, most of which are cut, spliced, respliced and then spliced again. My best bet at this point is to just start over with the wiring. I have been looking around at harnesses, but $600 is a little out of my budget right now. I've looked on eBay, LMC truck etc but am not sure what to go with. I don't want to go with the factory replacement as from my understanding, I would not be using the 6v parts.

If I were to buy a universal 12v harness, what would that mean for my gauges, lights, radio etc? This is where I get pretty confused. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Jonny

Thank you for posting this. It doesn't look like this comes with any type of fusebox or anything. Is this something I/d need to purchase separately? Thanks again,
Jonny

Rebel Wire is a supporter here. I picked up a 8 circuit fused panel with marked wires every 6 " for around 130. PLus they gave back to the site, Haven't installed, not an informercial. Just a thought/idea

If you want to add a fuse box to your 50 you will have to purchase it separately, its not included with the classic harness.

your tails and stop should already have fuses on the firewall.

Many of us add a fuse box.

Are their harnesses 12v with alternator? I didn't see it mentioned on there like it is on the Classic Parts site? Thanks!

I used the ClassicParts harness that DADS50 linked to (the 54-55 version). It didn't have a fuse box, and I decided not to add one. As he said there are (or should be) two fuses on the firewall for the tail/stop lights.

I don't plan on adding many aftermarket things to my truck... its all pretty much "stock" (no radio, speakers, extra lights, gizmo's, etc), so the few accessories (like turn signals) are run from the accessory post on the ignition switch. It was really pretty simple to run the wires, took me about a day, maybe two days to figure out the turn signal wiring.

I used a universal wireing kit from Speedway. It has a mini fuse block with 12 fuses. Each wire is marked every few inches. It has 2 flashers & headlight connectors. $150. You can't buy all that wireing & connectors yourself for that.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

There are no '6 volt' or '12volt, parts on a wiring harness. All the harnesses will be good for 12 volts.

If you want to add a reasonably period correct fuse assembly block look for one of these (regular item on eBay). Just make sure you get one that uses glass fuses instead of the bakelight type which are fairly rare.

Here is a picture of the type using the harder to source bakelite holders.

When I rewired my truck i just bought some wires in diffrent colours and made my own harnass with a fusebox. cost my about 50 bucks or so. Takes some time, but then again you can wire it as nice as you want!

smile

(I have been wiring a lot of trucks on my former job, so thats why i made a harnass myself, it isn't really that difficult on old trucks like these)

I bought one from gearhead world on ebay but haven't installed it yet (will in a few weeks) $139 12 volt 24 circuit with fuse box and all wiring is marked as to where it goes and has a easy to read instruction manual.

Thank you everyone for your advice, much appreciated. I ended up getting a free shipping coupon for Speedway so I went with theirs for $149.99 shipped.

Thanks again!
