I have a 1966 C-10 short step. I believe the rear end is the original 373 gears. The truck sat for five years before I bought it. After getting it running five years ago, the rear gears made a howling sound at 50 mph. Now, especially when I turn right, there is a loud banging sound coming from the rear end. I looked to see if the springs were seating properly, the u-joints are tight and the u-bolts were intact. All in all the visual inspection everything appears to be normal. In the last month, I had the rear axle seals replaced – and the shop that did the work didn’t note anything unusual. Any ideas why the banging sound is occurring?

posi rear slipping - could try draining and flushing it and refilling, but you may be looking at a rebuild

Actually Bill I kinda wondered. Before the rear seals were changed I had the GM additive for the rear end grease in there. The bang was less noticible but still there. I'm sure it has lots of miles on it... Should I do a ring and pinion change out or try a different axle? Tim-o

I'd check with a rear end specialist, could be salvageable, but a hi-miler may be on its last legs

I used a 12 bolt posi in my off topic Model A Hot Rod.

It chattered really bad when I first got the car on the road. I ended up using two tubes of GM posi additive to get it to stop chattering.

And yes, the posi still works, as is evident by two black tire marks when I put my foot heavy on the foot feed.
