I've been reading here about adding power steering to my original steering box. So then can I modify my original steering wheel to a smaller diameter? safely? Like cut the spokes, and attach a newer wheel rim?

I don't need tilt column, or column auto shift, so I was thinking the original column would be fine.

a smaller diameter wheel works fine with power steering, but I wouldn't want to trust/use a home modified wheel, many more modern wheels will fit the original splines

There are smaller (15") reproduction steering wheels made for many of our trucks, do a web search for your year truck and see what you find.

Any GM wheel through the 70's will fit the shaft. Possibly later ones will fit as well. I used a 3 spoke wheel from a Fiero. It has a similar look to the stock wheel but considerably smaller.
