Consider using a wide step plate on each board.

If you do, Tim's suggestion for a set of wide step plates so they don't get scratched is spot on! Keep a good coat of wax on them at all times to reduce the chance of rust is also recommended. Saw a set of smooth running boards installed by Kindig Designs that they fabricated a set of polished solid stainless steel strips for that looked beautiful. Probably very expensive....but they looked killer!!

One more thing, make sure it's plated correctly. Don't spend your good money on Chinese JUNK. It will begin to rust in a year. I painted mine the same color as the fenders of my 49 with a step plate. Cream truck Burgundy fenders and Cherry stained bed. Just to be totally honest, they looked terrible. Too much chrome, it wasn't quality chrome, and it was obvious where the driver had stepped every time to get into the truck.
In my opinion, black is the color for running boards.
