The PO had the exhaust manifold made into a double manifold for dual ehaust. It was a common practice back then to achive dual exhaust. I would like to go back to single exhaust and get the weight off the welded piece of exhaust manifold which was added. A cap off plate. In this way I do not have to remove the manifold and install a single. Are there any problems with this thinking? The weld seems solid but the manifold is old and the extra weight of another pipe system will in the future produce a large hole in the manifold just through age and vibration but where and when. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 639 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 639 | When stock manifolds were modified for dual exhaust, it was common to put a block-off plate inside the manifold to partialy or completely seperate the exhaust into the seperate pipes. If this was done to your manifold you will have to remove the manifold to remove the block-off plate. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 | Wouldn't it be simpler to just add a pipe hanger somewhere around the front of the cab to take some of the weight off the weld? They aren't hard to come by and aren't very expensive. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,154 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,154 | Thanks...I also noticed that the PO removed the heat riser and spring and welded up the holes...why? Jerry I may go your route. I had no idea that the manifold was separated inside thanks two tone. Yep...I would like to replace the manifold but the thought of snapping off bolts sucks. The old glass packs are about dead they must be sucking in air. I changed the spark plugs .060 gap for the HEI and adjusted the air/fuel on the Rodchester B all by use of vacumme gauge. But I still get the deceleration pops, snaps, and rumble my wife hates the noise. I check for leakage with carb cleaner and propane no manifold leaks and the vacume is steady at 20 timing and 17 for air fuel....it's got to be the pipes. This problem is really [censored] me off......Thx....Steve..ps I would like to talk to the PO but he is serving time in the jail house now and for sometime to come.

I have heard you can install a crossover (H-pipe ahead of the mufflers) that may help eliminate it, but I've never done it on my trucks... Iam looking for a muffler shop here that can do this type of work not a Box store set up. I'll inquire about a cross over pipe. I have no idea what kind of mufflers are out there so that should be fun. Thx...Steve | | |
