I have a damaged right front fender so bought another one at a swap meet last year. Cleaned it up (blasted) epoxy primered it and finished the underside, then installed it on the 1948 Chev truck. Oops, it does not match the left side fender. The area under the headlight is a totally different shape than the left side fender. I thought all 48-54 fenders would be the same, except the GMC which had a parking light under the headlight.

The left fender is gently curved from the grill, under the headlight all way back to wheel cutout. The right fender is almost flat under the headlight, from grill to corner, with sharp corner.

Are fenders different for some years? The old fender is repairable but gonna be lots of work. I cant spend $600 for a new one.

input needed.

GMC had a parking light that exposed the flat part of the fender for 54 and early 55. Chevy used a completely different grill in 54 and early 55 than it had used in previous years and it covered the flat spot. The 54, early 55 is hard to find if you need one. You can probably trade someone for the one you need. Late 1947 through 1953 is all the same which means there are a lot more of them around. This catalog illustrates the difference.

The only difference between the Chevrolet 47-53 fenders and the 54-55 is the area where the 54-55 grille extends a bit out from the radiator opening. Are you sure that you have a Chevrolet/GMC truck fender? I know that sounds like a stupid question for me to ask (and may well be), But either its wrong, or a poorly restored severely damaged one. Need some pics.

From Classic Parts:

54/55 front fender

47-53 front fender

They are different enough that I would look for a match for my specific 47-55 year (47-53 or 54/55).

Kenparker - I have a similar problem on my 1954 right front fender, someone bought a 50' fender and slapped it on and there is a gap where the grill meets and no recess for the parking lamp. You will need a 53 or earlier fender. I've seen them for $400 on classicparts.com.

I have three pictures. One of full front, one of left front fender and one of right front fender showing the difference. Question is how does one post pictures on this forum. I have to go thru photobucket (I have a Photobucket account). But how post????

Doesn't look a 54 Fender, for sure.

Update on my fender problem. I looked at two other chevrolet trucks yesterday in effort to determine a course of action. Discovered I was headed in wrong direction. The left front shone in the pix in above post is the wrong curves. The right in the post above is the correct for my 48 chev truck. Discovered that the left front has been hit - or some other damage- and whoever did the repair - if one can call it "repair' did not get the curvature right.

So, now I have to peel off all that 25 plus year old bondo and the tack welded in patch and rebuild the curvature at the bottom of the fender.

Oh well. Two steps forward and one back. About right for restoration work.
