I have a 248 that needs to be removed from a donor frame. I have only removed an engine once ever. My friend and I just picked bolts at random. I was 17 or 18 at the time and dumb. Are there specific bolt locations that I should use? I do not want to break anything.

Hy Joseph_Y, depending on what year we're talking about, one bolt on each side of the bellhousing up into/through the engine rear crossmember, two bolts at the front of the engine. Also drop the exhaust pipe off, then lift and separate (no that's an old bra ad), hope that helps.

3B, I think he's asking where to attach the chain to lift the engine. If I remember, someone said to use a couple of the head bolts, one at the front and one at the rear of the engine, on opposite sides. I just don't remember which side at which end.

I just used tow straps as slings and lifted mine off the frame with and engine hoist. As long as you make sure the straps can't slip it seems to work.

Whenever you leave behind failure that means you're doing better if you think everything you've done has been great you're probably dumb

Here is the proper way to lift the engine. This is for a 216 but yours wouldn't be all that different. Lifting Engine as per Shop manual

I did it like the Shop Manual shows but I used longer eye bolts and was able to leave the rocker assembly in place. This was on a 216 and a 270

I used to use head bolts (and sometimes rocker-arm post bolts - please do not groan too loudly) but I recently bought eye bolts from Tractor Supply Co.

Thanks for the help everyone. The 248 is sitting on the engine stand now. I ended up removing the rocker assembly as it was in the way of the head bolts. I forgot to take some pictures, so I have nothing fun to share.
