my wife's car dumped on her and now she wants to drive Lucenda Bolt , our 5 window to get back and forth to school.
Carolines truck is a 51 chevy. e/w a 292ci 6 cylinder and an RV mild cam. it has a clifford water heat intake manifold set up and 3+3 headers. it has a 4 barrel edelbrock 500 carb and I need to change it back to a single barrel carb and some sort of carb/plate adapter mount, a 5 speed T-5 Hybred transmission and a 3:40 rear end. the 500 wrks ok but uses a lot of gas .
WHAT WOULD be a good single barrel carb for this application ?? who makes an adapter plate ??
rochester with an electric choke? WHAT MODEL # CARB
thanks guys

I'd do a 500 cfm holley 2 barrel with the clifford adapter plate. The way your engine is now you should be able to get 17 miles per gallon cruising...unless you live in a hilly area or in the city? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,774 Carburetion specialist | | Carburetion specialist Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,774 | Give some thought before deciding to do a switch (not taking up for the e-clone, it may be the only carb I dislike more than the Rochester B).
How much city driving do you do?
The cam is going to absolutely kill fuel economy in city driving. While I would certainly agree with TJ that 17 (or more) MPG should be possible cruising down the highway; that figure could easily be less than 10 in city driving, especially this time of year.
Other issues which can hurt fuel economy: tires (bias instead or radial), tire pressure, a dragging brake shoe, and especially a bug screen on the front. Removing the bug screen on the front of my Dad's truck put there by a previous owner increased the fuel eoncomy by 20 percent!!!
The other thing to think about is payback. Consider the cost of any new carb, the number of miles driven annually; and you can determine how many years it will take to break even on your swap
Personal experience: I upgraded a single barrel Holley on my own 300 CID 6 to a 400 CFM genuine Carter, and went from 15 MPG to 22 MPG on the highway. City mileage also increased from 10 to 12.
The e-clone is a little large, but the primaries are SMALLER thus more efficient because of higher venturi air velocity than the 2-barrel Holley.
But the most important issue in this post is to consider your driving environment.

Guy did this on a 292 and from what he said on the free way he saw 20 miles to the gallon...and that's high for a 292 stock as far as I know...quadrajet, clifford intake, headers, hei. You might consider...inline 6's don't produce alot of vacuum..so the small primaries make for better combustion...and when you want to stomp on it...you have huge secondaries. Something to consider. Carburetor/manifold adapters are quite useful as paperweights, or if one is a circus barker or snake oil salesman.
But even the Q-Jet is not going to be a big improvement in city driving.
