Does anyone know the year that they are the same. A guy has the bed from a 56 for sell and I need a tailgate.

I asked the same question recently and mar k turned me on to their website with much reference material. Double check. Tailgates and front bed panels are the same '54-'87.

If you have more specific questions, ask the folks in the Making a Stovebolt bed forum. The people that have really taken their trucks apart, pass by there from time to time. Also, Mar-K has a tech that answers questions in there.
