Cant find info on this setup, but maybe it was an option to the the straight up air cleaner. Hope to learn of the PCV setup as well and why this air cleaner provided a different operation. Simple question, but I am unfamiliar. Someday I will need to replace with new/old cleaner and I am not sure what I am looking for and where I should look (yrs, models, Part #s). http://s1377.photobucket.com/user/douglashamilton1/media/K10/66aircleaner_zps6d7a9478.jpg.htmlThanks for assist.

That is weird looking (but to be honest I have seen it before - I just can't remember where). Here's something - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=189103

In my case no off set required but interesting none the less. I will keep eyes and ears open for more thoughts on why this might be sitting atop my 250. | | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 1,718 Moderator: 60-66 Trucks; North Eastern Bolters | | Moderator: 60-66 Trucks; North Eastern Bolters Joined: May 2007 Posts: 1,718 | Lugnutz you are on to something. Can someone confirm the years that might apply to my contraption? Post below suggest 67 to 72, but is it out of place on an earlier 6 cylinder? Also what is the purpose of the carb extension otherthan fitment over the valve cover? And without the carb extension (using traditional air cleaner) what do I lose or is the carb extension required, in all cases to get the air cleaner above the valve cover? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=633449 | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,228 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,228 | If you choose a different air cleaner, you will need to change the valve cover venting system to match the new air filter housing.
Your setup is pulling fresh air into the valve cover by way of the 1" diameter hose on the extension housing. I can not see from the picture, but suspect the PVC valve is at the back of the valve cover pulling vapors out of the engine sending them down the intake at the center ports between the carburetor and head. If you remove the extension housing, you lose the fresh air hose. You then have to remove the oil fill plug at the front of the valve cover and replace it with a breather and grommet. The engine has to have fresh air in for the PVC to work correctly. Aftermarket chrome valve covers have two holes on top and a PVC hole on the side towards the front. My stock valve cover has one hole on top and PVC on the side. What ever you choose, just be sure to vent the crankcase.
Your set up is probably pretty rare, so why not use it? The air filter element will be a standard size and any decent parts house should be able to match it up.

Need to refine my understanding of the pcv and crank case venting but your description is what I needed. I think your description of pcv on back end of valve cover is consistent with my setup. Not necessarily interested in giving up the air cleaner installed but it will need some repairs at some point and currently can't find the right ht filter. Currently the filter stands .25inch proud for the canister. Also if I bump into better condition cleaner or valve cover I want to be smart about comparability. Glad to hear of rarity. Could not find much info to this point after scanning to RPO list. Will open the linked pages more closely. Thanks again. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | Saw another post from a guy who has a 66 and wanted to add 67-68 booster. He was told to get a 67-68 off-set air cleaner and he found one at junk yard from a 250. Seems as though your motor was replaced? The 66 would not have the hole in cover unless the hole was added? Do you want to go back to 66 stock air cleaner/valve cover or add booster or leave it because it's neat?

Which hole or are you referring to - the vent tube hole or the pcv hole? The glove box decal sez the truck was ordered with a 292 so I suspect the 250 came later as you suggest. There is no evidence of a brake booster, so the offset air cleaner is still a mystery although the GMheritage pages show the 192 and 230 to have the offset cleaner in the pix. I like the look and intend to keep it, but all good info to know. At least that's what I call it. The crankcase needs to "breathe" but not necessarily thru carb. It's cleaner and better to "vent" into intake but you can vent into air legally, pre 1963. The pressure in crankcase is not good for engine components, it is caused by compression from pistons leaking backwards. It must be vented by draft tube, slots in cover, PCV, etc. Vehicles pre 1967, in my state, do not need emissions tested. It has been determined that the amount of pollution from these remaining vehicles is negligible. I guess the person who swapped the motor liked the air cleaner also. Very unique looking. Keep it.

I agree to the hardy look. i guess it is time to get the numbers off the motor to see what years might apply. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,228 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,228 | The large hose from valve cover to air cleaner extension is pulling fresh air into the engine, oil vapors go out the PVC, not through the carb. Clean air in the front of valve cover, vapors out the back.
