I believe about the only keepable part of my truck is the hood. However, there are years of dried oil and muck build up on the underside. What is the most effective method of removing this build up?

spray on oven cleaner first, just go to the dollar store and get about five cans and make sure you don't breath the stuff. we use it on engines too. works for Ken

Gunk, Gumout, Easy Off or Simple Green will work. Apply the product, allow it to set for 10-15 minutes. Prior to washing it off, hit it with a wire cup brush chucked in your drill. This will break up the big stuff before you rinse and repeat. Three or four times ought to get about anything off. If not, give another go or two. I just did the same thing on the tranny hump on my '66 K-10 so I could undercoat the bottom side and prime and paint the top side.

Every time I have tried do do what I thought would be easier with my truck it has ended up being a mess.
Just jump in and go for it.

Gunk engine cleaner and a scraper followed by hot water rinse works pretty good for most stuff like that.

Get what you can off using a paint scraper then go after it with a degreaser and a brush. If the rest of your truck is a goner then sell it and find something else to spend your time and money on.

The chassis/engine/hood are all good. I'm picking up a new cab this weekend from a fellow stovebolter on this site.
To be honest, I'm doing this for more than just the fun of it, I've had over 40 people help me work on it. If you do the type of work that I do, that's more important than the project itself.

The power of prayer is a mighty thing. It can even resurrect old trucks from the grave. Keep the young ones interested.

Working on it Haven't spent much time praying for the machine, although I do still believe in some miracles!

My Dad taught me all I know about cars, most of these kids who have Dad's who don't care about anything but themselves. Sad to say!

Hmmmmmm... Faith Based truck restoration. Just might work!

Hmmm... I'm thinking this would be a great project for a youth group. See if you can get someone to donate a stovebolt or sell you one really cheap and have the youth group restore it. Be a great experience for everyone and if the bolt you're working on doesn't turn out to be a money pit, you might even be able to sell it to raise money for the group. (Maybe at an auction?)

Sounds like a good idea!!! I wish my youth paster would do something like that...The only problem would be what to do with it at the end....good luck.

I think the only problem with deciding what to do with it would be convincing the kids to sell it.

I'm financing the restoration. Basically, it's cheap labor! (Is that illegal) I'm intending on keeping it, not selling. They just enjoy getting together and I feed them or whatever. It's guy bonding time, you know how that is.
