I am wiring the ignition switch on my '54 chevy pickup and cannot get it right. There are only 3 posts, I get no power with the key all the way to the right and can only start it when the key is in the middle position (accessory). Is it a faulty switch or am I just being stupid?

Is that the stock switch? My 54' only has two positions... off and on. three posts on the back.

It is not stock, it is a new replacement, if yours has only two positions then that may be my problem

If it is a new switch, does it have letter labels next to the posts on the rear of it?

Gary, what makes you think the middle position is 'accessory'? there was no accessory position on 6V switches, just on/off, and any switches I've seen with an accessory position, it's furthest left [CCW] - maybe you'll have a switch that works: OFF-ON-OFF with the stock wiring

Gary, the switch in my '53 works exactly the same way (to the right=off, straight up=on). There is a discussion in another thread as to whether this is the way it is supposed to be:
